A Sunday Funday Long hike

Outside the base runway.

My satellite communications work site on top of an old cinder cone.

A hike into the interior of the island.

A wind turbine farm.

Looking back at the US base.

My first time in the main town of Georgetown named after King George III.

Cool sign.

The government office building.

Interesting history to read.

The original marine barracks building. The United Kingdom settled into Ascension Island when Napoleon was exiled (1815 until his deather in 1821) to St. Helena Island 700 miles to the south. The marines keep a lookout to check for ships passing by from Europe in case a country was attempting to rescue Napoleon.

How cool is this to have in your yard!

Another view of the marine barracks. It housed 150 marines. Close quarters!

The original church.

Another place not to swim.

Deep dropoff so bad rip and sharks.

An interesting garage chapel.

Donkeys abound.

Ascension has a lot of interesting history.

  1. Thanks again for sharing your adventure to a very remote island! I know it must be difficult to wait for the internet and the slow speed, but these pictures have a way of letting us peek into your world. I bet you really enjoy the hiking. Be careful and stay away from stubborn donkeys. Have fun.
