Working on Island Weather Stations

I have been uploading my Palmer Station videos to YouTube. On the settings (the small gear on the bottom right side of the viewing screen) select HD for the best quality.

Humble Island, Antarctic Peninsula.

Working on the Penguin Station. During the summer this island is full of penguins. Scientists tag the penguins with transmitters to track where they feed. The data is sent to this station then relayed to Palmer Station.

Checking the batteries. Equipment will be added later.

Next stop, Halfway Island which is out of the standard boating area. Looking for a landing spot near the weather station.

A fun slide. The climb back up was a bit more difficult.

I am carrying the black backpack on the way to the weather station.

A full Antarctic rainbow!

Working at the weather station.

Hiking back to the boat.

Avior awaits us.

What an adventure job! How fortunate we are.

A berg on the way back.

A bit of a rainbow over Palmer Station.

The carpenter asked us to bring back a piece of bar ice to carve. Not an easy task grabbing this out of the water from the boat. Bar ice is ancient, could be thousands of years old, compressed glacial ice. It is great for carving on. People also like to chip off pieces for their drinks. The carpenter sees two whales in this piece. How cool! Standing in front of Avior.

An Unexpected Boating Day and a Sunrise Hike on Marr Glacier

I have been uploading my Palmer Station videos to YouTube. On the settings (the small gear on the bottom right side of the viewing screen) select HD for the best quality.

Boating videos including a few interesting ones working our way through heavy ice.

A huge storm blew in with hurricane force gusts. Much of the ice was pushed out clearing the way for boating.

It had been five weeks since a boat was out.

The Antarctic continent.

It's fun to drive a boat again. Joe and I took turns driving. Photo credit to Doc Steve.

Thanks Doc.

We hadn't seen this part of the Marr Glacier before.

a huge berg.

Every 30 minutes we call Palmer Station for a safety check to let the station know we are okay.

Palmer Station. Mt. William to the right.

Returning to station was very tedious as we worked our way around the ice. Mt. Moberly to the left.

We worked the boat through small cracks by pushing the ice out of the way.

Home!

After that was a great ramen lunch with shrimp and vegetables. Thanks Kristen!

The end of a great day.

A lone hiker on Marr Glacier. The top of Mt. William shining in the sunset.

The next morning I took a sunrise glacier hike. From the left, Mt. Agamemon, Mt. Moberly, and Mt. William.

The magnificence of the Antarctic continent 10 miles away.

Sunrise over the Marr Glacier.

Ice forming on rocks covered in moss.

Giant Petrels.

Quite a wingspan.

Giant petrels on the left and Palmer Station to the right of Hero Inlet.

A fine Sunday morning.

Cool berg.

Another view of Palmer Station.

Lots of blue in this berg.
