A Hike and Dive

 

Ascension Island waters are full of this fish.

The water clarity is amazing.

Fun times at my favorite beach at English Bay. A 40 minute bike ride.

Fairy Terns will fly right above your head to investigate you. Not aggressive at all though. They mate for life.

The remains of Fort Thornton. Fort Thornton is one of three defensive forts built in Georgetown. In a previous post, I posted pictures of Fort Bedford built inland on the slopes of Cross Hill.

Fort Thornton was built between 1885-1890.

A view of Cross Hill behind Long Beach, Georgetown. I have never seen anyone swimming at this beautiful beach as it has a very dangerous drop off and undertow along with aggressive sharks.

A Hike and Bike

 

One of my favorite activities while hiking is to prospect for obsidian. It is quite beautiful. My collection is growing.

I'm back in the saddle with a loaner mountain bicycle!

To get to my favorite swimming beach is a 2 1/2 hour walk but with the bike, it's only 40 minutes.

The water is crystal clear.

Black triggerfish are abundant on the reef.

My new ride! I can borrow it from the gym 10 days in a row. If no one else requests it I check it out for another 10.

It feels great to be back riding on the road. The hills are many and steep. No boring flat roads here!

Interesting.

These chains were used by the Royal Marines in the 1800s for discipline. When a marine was out of order he was required to swing this chain over his head. I wonder for how long.

A Walk to English Bay

 

The local 7 Eleven is open 3 hours a day 2 days a week.

The lava coast at English Bay.

English Bay is one of the prettiest beaches I have ever seen.

I went swimming anyway.

English Bay has a power plant, transmission antennas, and this BBC relay station.

People flying in say that the island looks like Mars would. It does have that look and color.

Two Helena pounds is about $3.

One Boat Golf Club has sand traps.

Volcanic sand instead of greens.

18 very rough holes. I hear golf balls and clubs take a beating.

I work nights. This is a favorite place to think, read and listen to the surf during the day.
