A Hike up Weather Post Mountain and an evening Hike to the Northeast Coast

Another hike overlooking the Devil's Cauldron.

The water catchment made by NASA for the tracking station.

The Northeast Coast of Ascension.

Our two hikes this day.

After our hikes, we went to the Royal Air Force (RAF) Travellers Hill Base for lunch and a few beers. They have EFES beer from Turkey. My daughter and I drank a lot of this when we bicycled through Turkey in 2015.

After work, we drove to the Northeast side of the island. This is an Ariane rocket tracking station. Ariane launches from French Guiana on the east side of South America. This station tracks those launches downrange.

Interesting read about land crabs.

The Northeast Bay has the remains of thousands of sea turtle hatchlings that did not make it to the sea last year.

The mothers laid their eggs too far from the water and the hatchlings became too hot and died while marching to the sea. There are literally thousands sitting on the beach.

An egg from last year.

Exploring the tidepools.

This octopus jumped out of the water and attacked me when I was filming. see the video at the end.

A very dead and well-preserved land crab.

  1. WOW. That octopus can jump fast! I wonder if you can help those baby turtles get to the water faster this next season? The crabs are just plain weird looking, but obviously have unique lives. This is a very interesting post!
